And The Multitudes Followed Him

Mat 8:1  When He had come down from the mountain, great multitudes followed Him.

Jesus has just finished His Sermon on the Mount, and had come down from the mountain.

In chapter 5, Jesus talks about the poor in spirit, the meek, the hungry, the merciful. He spoke about the kingdom of heaven and being persecuted. He spoke of being a light that shines to the world. Jesus talks of murder and judgement, adultery and hell, just to name a few.

In chapter 6, He talks about charitable deeds and when and how they should be. Jesus talks about how to pray and fast, and not be a hypocrite. He spoke of treasures on earth and treasures in heaven. He talked of worry, and His righteousness.

In chapter 7, He speaks of the judgement of others, and giving what is holy to the dogs. He asked you to seek, knock and find, and how  to treat others. Jesus teaches of the narrow gate, and false prophets, and how  you will know them. He talks about the users of His word, those that see but do not do.

At the end of chapter 7 Matthew tells us that the people were astonished, because He taught with one having authority and not as the scribes.

Now, here in verse 1 of chapter 8 Jesus is finished and has come down the mountain, and what do the people do? It says that great multitudes followed Him! Great Multitudes, that’s a lot of people!

This to me is an example of how we should be. Yes, we did just finish an 1hr long sermon at church, but I want to know more! Yes, we just read in the bible for an hr, but I want to know more! That’s what these people said. They were saying that was awesome and I want to know more. They didn’t want to stop learning and getting to know their Lord and Savior and neither should we.

I realized that we tend to listen to a sermon and then we’re done for the day we did what we had to do. The great multitudes that gathered for Jesus were very different. They wanted more. I saw this when I went to Peru, the people there were so hungry for the word, they just wanted more! I pray that I would want and seek more! I pray that I would dig in and learn about our Lord and Savior, I want to know Him who I worship and Him who I’m going to spend the rest of eternity with.
