Do You Live a Futile Life?

1 Peter 1:17-19 If you address as Father the One who impartially judges according to each one’s work, conduct yourselves in fear during the time of your stay on earth; knowing that you were not redeemed with perishable things like silver or gold from your futile way of life inherited from your forefathers, but with precious blood, as of a lamb unblemished and spotless, the blood of Christ.

Peter is speaking to Christians here. He’s saying, Hey if you call on the Father then live worthy!

God doesn’t judge according to our skin or race or even how much money or wealth we have. He judges us against the one who saved us. Everyone of us will stand before God, and our live’s will be judged. But What is Peter saying here? I thought we weren’t saved by works? Peter isn’t talking about “works” he’s talking about “work”, meaning our life as a whole. So what is our work? I believe our “work” is how much of our life resembles the one who died for us. Our deeds, our actions and most of all, how closely aligned our deeds are with Jesus.

Romans 12:2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.

See, it’s about living for God and getting closer to God in everything we do, in all our work and deed.

Peter say’s to conduct ourselves in fear during your stay on earth. I looked into the word fear here and it literally means “to be afraid”. This is the fear of the alternative, “Hell”. He says our stay on earth and that could only mean that after this we are going somewhere else, either Heaven or Hell.

It’s amazing to me how we don’t just allow ourselves to be transformed and live the life worthy of Jesus, even knowing the judgment ahead. Sure we accept Jesus as Savior, but then seem to  use it as an excuse to do what we want while we live our lives for ourselves here on earth.

If we could just make these next two verses hit home. We might take more serious our work of becoming transformed into the likeness of Christ.

1 Peter 1:18-19 knowing that you were not redeemed with perishable things like silver or gold from your futile way of life inherited from your forefathers, but with precious blood, as of a lamb unblemished and spotless, the blood of Christ.

Peter is saying, take your eyes off your worthless way of thinking. Take your eyes off the things that have no value in Heaven and set them on Jesus, who has all value, who is precious and unblemished. Set your eyes and your path on the Lord the one who paid with His blood to save you from an eternal separation from God.

Lord I pray that my stay on earth would be to your glory. I pray Lord that my work would be to love the way Jesus loved, and to serve the way Jesus served. I pray that I would not be conformed Lord but transformed into the likeness of Christ and serve You more.
